Mnemonics Head and Neck Anatomy

1. Function of lateral vs. medial pterygoid muscles
"La" : Jaw open, so Lateral pterygoid opens mouth.
"Me" : Jaw is closed, so Medial pterygoid closes the mouth.

2. Cavernous sinus contents O TOM CAT:
Oculomotor nerve
Trochlear nerve
Ophthalmic nerve
Maxillary nerve
Carotid artery (internal)
AbducenT nerve

3. Carotid sheath contents "I See 10 CC's in the IV"
I See (I.C.) = Internal carotid artery
10 = CN 10 (Vagus nerve)
CC = Common Carotid artery
IV = Internal jugular vein

4. Cervical plexus: arrangement of the important nerves "GLAST"
4 compass points: Clockwise from north on the right side of neck
Great auricular
Lesser occipital
Accessory nerve pops out between L and S
Supraclavicular
Transverse cervical

5. BELL'S palsy
Blink reflex abnormal
Ear ache
Lacrimation (deficient)
Loss of tast in anterior two-thirds of tongue
Salivation (deficient)
Sudden onset
Palsy of muscles of facial expression
All symptoms are unilateral

6. Extraocular muscles cranial nerve innervation "LR6 SO4 rest 3"
Lateral Rectus = 6th Nerve (Abducent)
Superior Oblique = 4th Nerve (Trochlear)
Rest = 3rd Nerve (Oculomotor)

7. CN VII muscle innervation
Imagine someone making the facial expression to say 'PSS..'
Facial expression muscles
Posterior belly of diagastric
Stapedius
Stylohyoid

8. Terminal branches of facial nerve (V11)
